1985 Our Story

Started with one bay.
Built over forty years.

Tony Allen Auto Service was founded in October 1985 by Tony Allen, his son Mike, and brother Anthony — three people, one workshop bay, and a straightforward approach: do the work properly, charge a fair price, and stand behind it. That approach hasn't changed.

Tony retired in 2004 and Anthony moved on to other opportunities, but Mike continued building the business alongside his sister until 2021, when she too moved on to new ventures. In 2004, Mike's son Dean joined the business as an apprentice — completing his apprenticeship, gaining NZTA WOF inspector authority, and earning his Advanced Technician qualification before stepping into Service Manager in 2014 and General Manager in 2022.

Today, Mike and Dean run the business together, with Dean taking on increasing ownership as Mike begins to ease toward retirement. The customer base now exceeds 10,000 contacts. Twelve staff work across seven specialist divisions at 139 Cavendish Drive, Manukau — the same address, a much bigger workshop.

South Auckland is a region that moves. Logistics, manufacturing, distribution, trades — the economy here depends on vehicles staying on the road. TAAS exists to make that happen for individual car owners and fleet operators alike, from one suburb over or one bay in 1985.

Why Choose Independent

What you get when you choose an independent workshop.

Franchised chains operate on targets. Dealers operate on margins. An independent workshop operates on reputation — because reputation is all it has.

01
No Franchise Rules

TAAS is not part of a national chain. There are no head-office upsell targets, no monthly quotas for recommended work, and no standardised pricing that doesn't reflect the actual job. Every recommendation is made by the technician who looked at your car — and every price is set for the work involved, not the category it fits into.

02
You Know Who's Working on Your Car

At TAAS, the technicians have names and histories. Raj is the lead diagnostics and auto electrical specialist. Hayden completed a four-year apprenticeship and is on the WOF inspector pathway. Corey runs the service operation. These are people you'll see again next time — which is exactly the kind of accountability a franchise model can't replicate.

03
Independent Doesn't Mean Unsophisticated

TAAS runs factory-level diagnostic equipment, services European vehicles that many independent workshops turn away, operates a disc skimming and machining service, and holds approved repairer status with five mechanical breakdown insurance companies. The difference from a franchise is ownership and accountability — not capability.

What We Do

Seven specialist divisions.
One address.

Most workshops handle a few things well. TAAS was built so that every specialist service — from a WOF to European diagnostics to fleet account management — is handled in-house by people who focus on that one thing.

The Team

The people who work on your car.

Not avatars, not a brand voice. Real technicians with qualifications, specialisations, and accountability for the work they do.
